Reusable Pure Glass Bottle Launched
Posted by Paul Fiddian - Packaging International's Lead Reporter on 18/07/2012 - 06:40:00
A United States-based researcher has come up with a new glass water bottle design that's shatter-resistant and can be used again and again.
The Pure Glass bottle is the brainchild of Walt Himelstein and feature several innovative features.
A translucent shell coats the Pure Glass bottle so, should it crack, this coating keeps its structure intact. The coating is also able to be incinerated, post consumer-use, without producing any harmful emissions or residues.
Pure Glass Bottle
The Pure Glass bottle is not freezer or microwave-suitable, but it can be placed in a dishwasher. Available in both 17.5 ounce (the ‘Traveler') and 25 ounce (the ‘Explorer') sizes, it can contain cold or hot liquids and, with businesses in mind, it is fully customable, so can be decorated with corporate logos or other designs.
"Hazardous materials were delivered in glass bottles with a material coated on the exterior", Himelstein explained in comments quoted by the New York Times. "If a coating could be developed for containers of hazardous materials, I thought why not for glass water bottles?"
"If you give people a choice, 99 per cent will choose to drink out of glass", he added, this time in comments published by Glass News. "It's been around for thousands of years and is the drinking material of choice. We're sending a lot of samples right now, and the response I'm getting is that consumers are looking for a product like this."
Shatterproof, Reusable Bottle
‘Pure Glass Bottle combines the purity of glass with a permanent clear protective outer coating that is BPA-free, for impact resistance and the coating is FDA-sanctioned for contact with food', its developers state on this shatterproof, reusable glass bottle's official website.
‘The Pure Glass Bottle is portable, reusable, environmentally friendly and safe to use. The bottles and tops are dishwasher safe and can be used with any beverage you would normally put in a glass.'
Planned for the future are a range of Pure Glass bottle developments including a version designed for school lunchboxes and new colour and label variations. Packaging International will look at these in future News coverage.
