With a 30-year history in the lamination supply and equipment business, GBC Films Group is at the forefront of the lamination industry. The GBC story begins with lamination supplies and equipment for the commercial thermal lamination market. Today, GBC provides an extensive line of supplies and equipment to both the commercial publishing market and the digital print industry. To better understand GBC Films Group, one must know the GBC story, current business alliances and how these factors, coupled with the future of print publishing, will position GBC for success tomorrow.
The foundation
Built on a solid foundation of thermal film and commercial lamination equipment, GBC Films Group is a division of General Binding Corporation. Founded in 1947 by William Lane II, GBC manufactures binding equipment and supplies. During the 53 years since its inception, the company has diversified into many aspects of the finishing industry by acquiring companies and developing and integrating them into the GBC vision.
In 1962, GBC started designing and manufacturing laminators. Two years later, North American Packaging and Laminating Company, based out of Addison, Illinois, was purchased. This is where the acronym NAP LAM was founded. The Addison plant was converted to manufacture thermal laminating films that still carry the NAP LAM name. The success of this venture lead GBC into the commercial laminating market in 1986.
To meet the demanding needs of the commercial publishing market, GBC began to produce a variety of thermal film sizes and finishes. With success in the commercial arena, GBC sought to broaden its base with the addition of wide-format finishing. In 1995, GBC acquired Pro-Tech, based out of Madison, Wisconsin. The Pro-Tech acquisition solidified GBCs position as a player in both the commercial and wide-format finishing markets.
In 2002, at the Digital Print Industry’s annual trade show in Dallas, Texas, GBC announced the GBC/Neschen Joint Venture. This Joint Venture brings the German-produced Neschen line of high-quality pressure sensitive adhesive films to the GBC lamination product line-up. The Joint Venture is also the starting point for the two companies to build a PSA film plant in the United States. With the addition of PSA films, GBC now provides a full-line of finishing equipment and films to the commercial and wide-format print industries.
The future
GBC built its foundation for success on a long history of service and support to the commercial lamination market. With the addition of wide-format equipment and film, the company is now positioned to grow with the future of lamination. For GBC, providing equipment and films that meet customer’s needs has driven the company’s future. GBC has the support of an advanced test lab of application experts who work closely with customers to create films that solve tough application problems, improve performance and achieve the desired finish.
Recognized throughout the finishing and the packaging industry as a leader in lamination films and equipment, GBC Films Group will continue to supply commercial, wide-format and digital printers with laminators and the highest quality film products available.
