The FMS force sensors use a full strain gauged Whetstone Bridge do have significant advantages against other systems: reproducible tension values, high accuracy, display of real units (Pounds or Newton's), compact design, maintenance free fast responding and high overload protection are the main advantages. All FMS force sensors do have a mechanical overload protection which protects the measuring web of durable deformation in overload situations. The overload protection is up to 20 time nominal force of the sensor.
The FMS force sensors can be connected depending on the application to a wide range of FMS amplifiers or FMS tension controllers including bus systems implementation (Profibus ®, CAN, etc). The electronic unit supplies the force sensor with a highly stable direct current voltage. The wrap angle at the force sensor creates a resultant force. This forces creates a very low stress and compression to the measuring web on which the strain gauges are mounted.
The force sensor creates a proportional signal to the material tension. This signal is amplified in the FMS-electronic unit to 0..10V or 0/4...20mA to be connected it with a PLC for example. If a FMS-tension controller is connected to the force sensor the signal is not just amplified it keeps the tension on the requested value through a reference/feedback comparison over an controller. The tension is therefore kept at the requested level through direct control of a drive / brake / clutch in a closed loop system.
