All from one mold

Baumer Electric Ltd

A uniform casing design, the same calibration and start up, as well as standardized mounting- and alignment fixtures are the features of this series of sensors, which encompasses many different technologies. This results in a ltitude of advantages with construction of machines and equipment, especially where different sensor technologies are required.

The proven and time-tested sensor series 20 from Baumer Electric offers all sensor technologies currently on the market in a compact plastic casing with small installation depth. The range of products consists of optical, inductive and capacitive sensors.

Thus not only the advantages of a uniform casing for all varieties of sensors – such as consistency of all hole patterns, proximately the same position of the transmitting- and receiving axis and activated surface among the sensors are evident – but also the advantages of the electronic Teach-in. No matter which type of sensor is to be used, the set-up sequences are always the same. A priceless advantage with construction of new equipment, as well as for the service technician in the field during assembly and start-up.

Optical Sensors

The optical sensors transmitting with visible red light are available as reflection light scanners

(scanning distance 500 mm), reflection light scanners with background fade-out (Scanning distance 200 mm), one-way photo-sensors (range 8m) and reflection light sensors with polarization filer (range 5m)

Optical Sensors

The generation of sensors is equipped with features, which clearly improve reliability during application. The scanning distance or sensitivity can be adjusted with all sensors, integrated intelligence enables suppression of the two-way optical influence of sensors and a diode line was introduced with the reflection light sensor with background fade-out.

The major advantage of a reflection light sensor with background fade-out is that - independent from the color and surface of the object - the scanning distance can be adjusted exactly. Two Teach-in possibilities are available to the user: a static and a dynamic Teach-in process.

Static Dynamic

The reflection light sensor, the reflection light sensor with background fade-out and the reflection

light barrier are equipped with an algorithm to suppress the two-way optical influence of two sensors. It is therefore possible to install sensors close to one another without influencing each other, the result of which can be faulty operation. A property, which is of great significance with installation processes of several sensors within a small space. Despite the additional signal processing expenditure response- and drop-out times of <0.5 ms are guaranteed.

The standard reflection light sensor is equipped with polarization filters, which enable the sensor to detect even high gloss finished or reflective objects. For detection of fabric, cotton, thin paper or semi-transparent objects the sensitivity of the potentiometer can be adjusted such that the light shining through has no influence on the sensor. The competitively priced reflection light sensor can be used for simple applications without background interference or to distinguish black and white.

Ultrasound Sensors

Ultrasound Sensors

The compact 20 mm plastic casing sets new standards in the world of ultrasound sensors. To accommodate the intricate electronics including the required periphery in such a compact casing proved to be quite a challenge for the design engineers. This integration was only possible with the extremely consistent use of tailor-made ASIC’s, smallest SMD components and chip-onboard technology in combination with the most modern manufacturing methods.

However the sensor data, which were achieved in perfect interaction of the electronics with the transducer, which was developed especially for this series of sensors, speak for themselves. The latest array of miniature design ultrasound sensors currently offers data and application comfort far beyond what had been yesterday’s limit for models of this size. A range of final values up to 200 mm, resolution of 0.3 mm irrespective of the selected measurement distance, typically 6 0 angle of beam, LED adjustment aid and M8x1 plug connection.

Available are digital switching sensors (NPN/PNP), sensors with analog output signals from 0…10 VDC or 4…20 mA. It is possible for sensors, as well as analog sensors to have electronic Teach-in with standardized Teach-in play. At the push of a button directly on the unit or alternately over a control input it is possible to adapt the switch points, the measurement range of the sensors, as well as the effective direction of the output quickly and easily to the particular application. The control input also has the great advantage that no direct access is required with very restrictive space ratios.

Teach-In Function Diagram

Inductive and capacitive

A well-balanced array of inductive and capacitive sensors completes the product family of plastic casings. The series with factory made, inductive proximity switches, which cannot be built in, have a switch distance of 12 mm. Other designs are equipped with a Teach-in button. The switch points of the sensors can thereby be quickly and efficiently be set to the respective optimum values.

The advantages of the Teach-in are fully effective especially during the proper adjustment of the capacitive sensors: it may be to detect materials with differing dielectric constant, or to safely suppress or eliminate these in the instance of a fill level detection through a container wall or packaging. The maximum switching distance of the capacitive proximity sensors is 15 mm.

The thought of a family continues past the interchangeable casing design and the array of differing technologies. During the development phase of the 20-series allowances were made as well for optimum fastening and alignment of the sensors in any conceivable position and application. The multi-functional fastening angleSENSOFIX(Ill. 3) provided with a universal joint permits quick and immobile installation in random positions and orientation in all sensors of the 20-series. A strong and matured family of sensors well thought out from A - Z.
