Franeker, May 2003. Goods handling is an important cost item in the retail sector and any saving on it is particularly welcome.

Under contract to Menken Orlando in the Hague, Huhtamaki Protective Packaging has designed a 4-cup transport tray from moulded fibre, which significantly improves the handling of small packs and strengthens the market position of Menken Orlando.

The small packs from Menken Orlando consist of uniform plastic beakers with lids, filled with daily fresh ingredients for salads etc. to be sold in refrigerated displays in supermarkets. The full beakers are put in trays and then packed in CBL crates.

The beakers are taken out on arrival at the supermarket and put on sale in chilled cabinets. Bad clamping of the beakers in the transport packaging, combined with the wearing of gloves, used to lead to frustration, lost time and damage.

On the basis of the dimensions of the Menken Orlando beaker, Huhtamaki has developed and manufactured a new 4-cup transport tray to make these problems past tense. The 4-cup transport tray is slightly conical and easily nested as a result. Solid cardboard “stops” between the cups ensure the trays are just as easily denested again.

Each opening is provided with three clamping ridges on the inside, which keep the cups in position. Ample notches all round ensure that the trays can easily be taken out of the CBL crates, even with gloves on.

The 4-cup transport trays can be recycled as wastepaper after use. The new Huhtamaki 4-cup transport trays are supplied in pallet boxes of 2430 trays.
