Major European and Worldwide manufacturer of water treatment and other Chemicals, Kemira has recently installed three Logopak 920 Print and Apply Labellers in its Bradford West Yorkshire manufacturing Site.
Head quartered in Finland , but with manufacturing world wide, Kemira produce chemicals for;
- Detergents and cleaning,
- Feedstuffs, Foodstuffs,
- Water treatment,
- Oil & Gas,
- Pharmaceuticals and
- Pulp & paper.
Print and Apply Labellers for Pallets
The Bradford site produces water treatment chemicals in 25 kilo sacks and 1 tonne bags and required pallets of these to be labelled after hood and stretch-wrapping and 25 kg sacks to be labelled for a specific customer.
The first machine to be installed was a Logopak 920PF pallet labelling system, used for the application of two adjacent side (A5) labels to palletised loads of 25kilo sacks of water treatment chemicals and other products.
Two conveyors fed by 4 production lines feed into one robot palletiser system which builds two pallets at a time.
After pallet assembly, a short section of shuttle car conveyor places the pallet onto the out-feed conveyor where the Logopak 920PF is located.
As this location is in a building which has open aspects to the outside environment, it was important that this machine was protected from the “elements” and Logopak were the only supplier of pallet labelling equipment with a fully sealed enclosure.
Located close to an open pallet out-feed area and in direct line of cold winds, the Logopak 920Pf was installed with a standard internal heater and operating trapdoor to maintain a positive internal atmosphere.
Labelling two adjacent faces of the pallet with an A5 label at up to 80 pallets per hour with data for the labels being triggered by the conveyor and coming from a host system already installed by Kemira.
Kemira also purchased two Logopak 920 TVM print & apply labellers for the application of a large dimension sack label to the top face of sacks of product after automatic filling machinery.
The installation of these machines was difficult for a number of reasons.
- The slightly smaller than A4 label size dictated that the labelling machine had to be a Logopak 920 type.
- This machine type is very heavy and large in size.
- Because of the dusty, cold and damp environment, enclosures were needed on the labellers.
- This added to the weight ( 560 kilo) and size of the whole assembly.
- Two production lines were very close together, leaving little space for the support.
- Two machines had to be held by one support.
This then demanded that Logopak design and manufacture a special and complex support structure designed exactly for that conveyor location and it had to be lifted over and into position by crane.
The 920 TVM's were chosen, because of their reliability and their ability to apply an A4 label size and also because of their compatibility to the Logopak 920PF pallet labeller.
The Logopak 920 range is today, the only industrial range of print and apply machinery which can apply an A4 label.
The Logopak 920 TVM machines will be Labelling at up to 17 sacks per minute on this large label size and running on a two shift basis, with data for the sack label sent in batch format to each machine in ASCII file format by the same host system which is used to send the pallet label data.
