Peristaltic pumps, manufactured by Watson-Marlow and installed on the UV varnish tower coater of MAN Roland R700 series printing press, have reduced downtime, increased production speed and proved their reliability in use.
Two 701 baseplate pumps are now fitted on every R700 series press, one pump accurately meters the water-based varnish from a container to a weir on the press, and the other, fitted with slightly larger bore tubing, scavenges the excess varnish and returns it for re-circulation.
Specially built for MAN Roland, the Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps contain the viscous varnish within a tube from source to delivery. Another advantage of using peristaltic pumps is in the saving of waste varnish at start-up, as there is no necessity to prime the system.
Long-life Marprene tubing is fitted in the pumps, which run for between 8 and 16 hours each day. Tube changes are the only pump maintenance required and this is a rapid procedure which can be carried out in a few minutes without tools. If press maintenance is required, the system can be completely drained, further minimising waste.
