Miniature photoelectric sensor OJPG detects clear objects.
The use of PET bottles has been increasing in the food and beverage industry for a long time and shows no sign of slowing down. In Löningen in Lower Saxony the company WEG (Weser – EMS Erfrischungs GmbH) with around 170 employees produces soft drinks for large discount chains. WEG fills about 1.5 million PET bottles every day, so 25,000 bottles per hour move through on six bottling lines operating in three shifts around the clock. The bottles must be detected precisely and reliably at high speed at different positions. A polarised retro-reflective sensor recently developed by sensor market leader ifm electronic performs this task. It is specially designed to detect transparent or semi-transparent foils, bottles and packaging.
With a switching frequency of 2,000 Hz this tiny device (it’s only 24 x 35 x 11 mm) does not even miss the fastest bottle, and ranges of 1.5m can be achieved using a high-quality prismatic reflector.
The OJPG compact photocell is available with side or front lens. This ensures high flexibility for installation. The retro-reflective sensor is very easy to use, which is another advantage for WEG. The “plug and play" units were installed without any need to adapt them to the application, a considerable time and cost saving time for the user.
