Fusion Packaging Launched by Smurfit Kappa

Smurfit Kappa UK

Two-piece corrugated and solidboard retail-ready pack available for the first time from a single UK supplier.

Europe’s leading paper-based packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa is launching new ‘Fusion’ packaging at easyFairs® Packaging Innovation 2009 exhibition on 11-12 February 2009.

Fusion Packaging

This packaging technology ‘fuses’ together the supply chain performance of corrugated with the in-store performance of solidboard to create the ultimate retail-ready single-pack solution. As the sole UK supplier of both corrugated and solidboard Smurfit Kappa is the only company able to provide this style of packaging from within the UK domestic market.

Two-Piece Corrugated and Solidboard Retail-Ready Pack's

Fusion PackagingFusion packaging comprises of a detachable corrugated hood with a solidboard base. The strength and stackability of the hood has been designed to eliminate transit damage to ensure product reaches customers in optimal condition. In contrast the solidboard base provides a high quality print medium to create maximum brand impact at point-of-purchase.

Adrian Bird, Sales & Marketing Director at Smurfit Kappa said: “Fusion packaging is a completely unique offering from Smurfit Kappa. For the first time manufacturers and retailers will be able to procure one single pack - which blends corrugated board’s transit strength with solid board’s quality branding opportunities – from one single UK supplier. Having proven extremely successful in other European territories, we are certain that it will take the UK retail-ready market by storm.”

The packaging is an intuitive design meaning shelf stackers can easily distinguish the solidboard base intended for display, from the corrugated hood which is to be disposed of. Opened within five seconds, the design allows for easy replenishment to ensure continuous availability of product in store.

Compliant to retailer requirements, Fusion packaging uses no mixed materials and both materials used are 100% biodegradable and recyclable within the same waste stream. The thin caliper of Solidboard means there is minimum physical impact on-shelf which is expected to provoke more favourable consumer perceptions of secondary packaging.

Fusion packaging has been designed to maximize the number of on-shelf facings and cube efficiency. The solidboard used is also a unique, compact, fibre based material with high resistance to moisture, allowing it to be used within the chilled and frozen sectors.

Smurfit Kappa currently supplies Fusion packaging to German and Czech markets with customers including Unilever. Retail-ready boxes have been developed with bottom flaps or a crash lock bottom for spray, pouch and bottle FMCG products, whilst primary packaging boxes with a permanent corrugated inlay have been designed for granulates like washing powder, cat litter and other loose material.

Fusion packaging can be hand or machine erected and can be adapted to suit any customers’ packaging line with minimal impact.
