Faerch Plast Reduce Energy Consumption by 33% Per Thousand Trays

Faerch Plast A/S

Climate changes and household waste are red-hot issues within the present environmental debate.

With a long-term strategy for the reduction of negative environmental impact, Faerch Plast is setting new standards.

Household waste being sent to landfill has become a large problem and it is obvious to producers, retailers, and consumers alike, that something has to be done.

Packaging Weight Reduction

In the UK especially, landfill sites are almost full and constitute a growing concern to politicians as well as private companies. Retailers are a major influence on the packaging industry’s environmental impact and have set targets for reducing the packaging weight used by their suppliers.

These targets influence the entire value chain and push those within it to examine their own processes and procedures in order to find ways to reduce their environmental impact wherever possible.

The environment can be found high on the agenda of most private companies, and Faerch Plast is one European plastic packaging company making an extra effort when it comes to protecting the environment.

‘We were pioneers 10 years ago being the first to make reducing energy consumption a priority. At present, the European packaging industry’s debate about the environment and waste coincides with the global discussion about Climate Change. It is our intention to remain pioneers when it comes to protecting the environment,’ says Managing Director at Faerch Plast Jens Bornstein.

In order to better protect the environment, Faerch Plast is committed to a set of 5-year targets:

  • To buy from only 100% sustainable electricity sources.
  • To reduce the weight of trays by a further 30%.
  • To task all suppliers to reduce their energy consumption by 20%.
  • To supply a truly sustainable and compostable heat stable material for microwave applications.
  • To have the smallest Carbon Footprint in the plastic packaging business.
  • To encourage the collection and recycling of all plastic packaging in all the markets we are present.
  • To use post consumer recycled materials wherever it is technically possible, financially viable and safe.

Since 1996, Faerch Plast has reduced energy consumption per thousand trays produced by a staggering 33%. This equates to the annual electricity consumption of 4,720 households.

In 2006, Faerch Plast had a turnover of appr. EUR110 million and a profit before tax of appr. EUR 12 million.
