New Digital Line Sensor Sees and Thinks

In many converting processes web guiding is best done by detecting a printed line or pattern edge rather than the material edge.

The Swiss company FMS (Force Measuring Systems) recently introduced a new digital line sensor that tracks even the most difficult to read lines and edges - those that are discontinuous or intersect other lines or cross changing backgrounds. The sensor (DLS) works for virtually any web material, regardless of composition, colour, texture, opacity, or reflectivity. The reliability of line recognition is second to none.

This "smart" detection capability is made possible by digital technology. Digital technology also makes the sensor highly accurate (resolution 6 / 100 mm) and very fast (cycle time 2 ms) - ideal for high-speed processing.

FMS Digital Line SensorWith only two buttons, the sensor is simple to set up and use. The "Mode" button is used to set the unit to read lines, edges, or whatever provides the best contrast. When the user pushes the "Calibrate" button two things happen: the DLS automatically finds the lighting colours that deliver maximum contrast for optimal recognition and it stores settings for line width, polarity contrast, and other parameters - all within a fraction of a second.

This intelligent digital sensor can distinguish between guiding lines, printed characters, and similar patterns. It automatically ignores breaks in the line, errant marks, and printer's imprints that intersect the line. The software can be configured to meet specific conditions. These capabilities make the DLS a powerful solution in many cases where analog detectors are useless.

The DLS includes a LED position indicator that visually displays the material position. It uses standard 24V DC power and the unit is galvanically isolated against electrical noise.
The new digital sensor is one of three series of web guiding sensors made by FMS. The other two are optical and ultrasonic edge sensors. The sensors are part of the full range of FMS web guiding equipment including electronic components, force sensors, controllers, and steering frames.

Force Measuring Systems AG has been designing and manufacturing precision devices and systems for web guiding and tension measurement and control since 1993. The Swiss company offers its products and services worldwide.
