SubscribeA range of 15ml glass bottles designed by packaging container specialists Johnsen & Jorgensen (J & J), in conjunction with B & DFL, have won the Gold Award for packaging innovation, at the prestigious ‘Excellence In Food & Drink Awards 2006’.
The single-portion 'Voyager' bottles are made specially for Barker & Davis Foods Ltd (B & DFL) of East Sussex, who manufacture restaurant quality meal accompaniments including salad dressings and vinaigrettes, chutneys, salsas, pestos and sauces for airline and train catering companies, special event and hotel banqueting markets.
J & J and B & DFL designed the 15ml 'Voyager' bottles in response to their requirements for a stylish single-portion glass bottle with a leak-proof and tamper-evident metal screw cap.
'Voyager' bottles are being used in ever-growing numbers on British Airways' 'Club Class' flights as well as by other airlines and hotel groups, in particular Sheraton Hotels.
It was the universally favourable response to the 'Voyager' bottle that persuaded B & DFL to enter the 'Excellence In Food & Drink Awards'. Sponsored by The Caterer Group and 3663 First For Foodservice, the Awards are now in their fourth consecutive year. Their main aim is to recognise excellence among the many products available in the food service sector.
Airline catering accounts for around one-third of B & DFL turnover and it was the Voyager bottle design which originally opened doors at the big airlines. The previously-used 12ml bottle-size wasn't big enough and the cork stoppers tended to leak in transit.
J & J Sales Manager, Mike Bogod, was delighted when his company's proposals were chosen over two major competitors:
"We'd worked with Barker & Davis for three years so we knew what their approach would be," Mike explained. "Glass was an obvious choice for upmarket clients such as British Airways, and the tamper-evident screw-cap metal closures are not only leak-proof; they look good too.
"The news that B & DFL have won this top Award is the icing on the cake for us - as well as endorsing the fact that we're producing the right product at the right price."
