Two 2 years ago National Starch brought innovation to the European Packaging market with their COOL-MELT ULTRA range of low temperature technology adhesives for the Packaging Market.
Through their continuous development process and strong focus on innovation, National Starch has developed a case and carton sealing hot melt adhesive that is applied at only 90C!
NOVACOL 90 is a unique step forward in operator safety and life expectancy of the application machinery.
Here at National we believe that supplying our customers with just glue is not enough. By talking to our customers and understanding what is important to them, we have been able to develop solutions that satisfy their current and future needs. No one had asked us to develop a 90°C hot melt, but it is clear by the response to NOVACOL 90, that it is something that is needed. So what key needs has NOVACOL 90 been able to satisfy?
Improvements in Safety
One key area that is very important, is the time and cost of operator injuries. Industry studies show that 6% of employees suffer some type of burn injury while at work, and these frequently lead to long recovery periods and expensive medical treatment.
NOVACOL 90 practically halves the traditional application temperature! The improvements in operator safety are significant, but as a responsible supplier, National still recommends following normal safety procedures when handling adhesives.
The severity of a burn depends on the length of time that the area is held above the burn temperature. For example, 1 gramme of a traditional hot melt requires 18 seconds to cool down below 80°C, and will be constantly burning during those 18 seconds. Applied at 90°C, only 10°C above the burn temperature, NOVACOL 90 will significantly reduce the occurrence of severe burns.
Reduced energy use
Measurements carried out in a production process showed that NOVACOL 90 requires 33% less energy from the hot melt unit, all along the production cycle. This can produce considerable savings in a multi-line plant. The reduction in energy use will have a positive impact on the environment, and this is an important KPI for many leading food producers and Supermarkets.
Reduced maintenance
At 90°C, NOVACOL 90 has no opportunity to form char that would block or damage nozzles, filters, guns and hoses. This significantly reduces expenditure on spare parts saving £000's per annum. And, there will be reduced downtime from maintenance or char related stoppages and increased line efficiency.
Excellent Adhesive Properties
Most adhesive companies develop an adhesive that has a low viscosity so that it is thin enough to wet the surface of the board, or will recommend running a thick adhesive hot so that it "burns" into the surface. NOVACOL 90 uses unique patented technology so that, even though applied at 90C to all types of paperboard such as kraft paper, recycled and grease-resistant, its adhesion has the same strength and secuirity as traditional high application temperature adhesives. Customers are assured that their products maintain integrity and a quality image in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Easy to Use
NOVACOL 90 is used through exisiting packaging machinery at existing speeds. Before production begins, all that is required is a clean out of the application equipment.
